Excerpt

Startled, I stumbled back. “Why shouldn’t I try out?”

Trace stammered, “Y-You don’t even have a skyboard.”

I had a skyboard. At his house.

Tall and lanky, he glared down his long nose. “An acceptable one.”

“She can borrow one,” Sarita interjected. “It’s in the rulebook. Anyone may ask for a school skyboard for recruit tryouts. If she’s a student, she has every right.”

At Sarita’s words, my spine straightened. It had begun to shrink over the years under the weight of ongoing pressure. There never seemed to be a day when I didn’t worry about how to pay for the cottage or food or if my father found a way to hack into my credits. For once, I wanted to be like any other student. I repeated, “I have every right.”

His eyes stormy with anger, Trace stomped away.

Sarita elbowed me. “I can’t believe you stood up to him. He is so…intimidating.”

I’d upset him. His father had tasked me to protect him. The irony didn’t escape me. Maybe I didn’t need to be his friend to stay close to him. Instead I’d just annoy him all the time and be in his face that way. I pointed out, “You just stood up to him.”

“I did, didn’t I?” She grinned at first. Then, turning pale, her voice dropped to a whisper, “What was I thinking? It’s Trace. He’s like a god.”

Making a vomiting sound, I said, “He wasn’t being fair.”

“Are you really going to do it? Have you ever been on a skyboard?”

“A few times,” I said absently. Why had Trace been afraid? For the first time, I stopped to think about why Sir Lyon wanted me here. Maybe the older man wasn’t just being a hover parent. Maybe something was happening at this school. Sir Lyon hadn’t acted all that honorably when he recruited me, but Trace didn’t deserve to suffer for his father’s questionable actions. My shoulders squaring, I told Sarita, “Let’s do it.”

Author Bio:

Priya Ardis writes Blood&Treasure fantasy romances which include coming of age, bad boys, globe-trotting, and a spoonful of sassy banter.

She loves books of all kinds–but especially the ones that ensnare you and let your chai go cold. Her novels come from a childhood of playing too much She-Ra and watching too much Spock. She started her first book at sixteen, writing in notebooks on long train rides during a hot summer vacation. Her favorite Arthurian is the Lady of Shalott by Lord Tennyson.

What does she like to read? Books with fantasy and magic with a cool heroine that’s really just the girl/boy next door. Books with all the feels. And, hello, Mr. Darcy anyone?
